A new year and a fresh new look for Affordable Textiles caught my eye and brought a big smile from staff when I gave the thumbs up. This is one of the last fabric stores left on Queen west of Spadina, keeping "garment" front and center. Bravo!

It's thanks to Luke Anderson and his fine team at StopGap.ca that so many of our favourite shops and haunts in the GDNA catchment, and now far beyond, have ease of access with their colourful ramps. Whether pushing a pram, pulling a cart, or rolling along in a wheelchair, StopGap ramps help make life that much better for everyone.
Their online art auction opened last evening in 401 Richmond at Tangled Arts running until Friday. Funds raised will go to the StopGap foundation to continue the work. Below are photos of some of the artists and supporters at the opening. If you know a store that would benefit speak to the owner or contact Aj@StopGap.ca and help build community together. Roll on! What a treat to see a familiar store name and old friends in attendance at the Royal Winter Fair on Friday. Some may have shopped in T.O.Leather's store on Spadina at Camden. Sebouhi and Toros send their warmest regards to the GDNA. While they moved to King City in 2018 they were delighted to be remembered.
Long-awaited work on Brant just south of Richmond was recently completed, turning a parking boulevard into welcome greenery and adding trees to be enjoyed by all. Protective fencing completes the project to great effect. Thanks to all!
The West Queen West BIA has engaged De Anne Lamirande to boost their image. She has only to add a QR code to this logo on the west side sidewalk of Bathurst at Queen. The WQWBIA have added sidewalk planters with the same logo. Great to see support for local businesses.
Lorne's Coats has left Spadina and has returned to 320 Queen Street West, a few doors east of the Rivoli. While outside the catchment, Lorne's was the last clothing manufacturing on Spadina so they are more than worthy of mention given we are the 'Garment District'. And like the sign says, they are Canadian and certainly local. Same great quality, selection, and staff. Drop by to say hello and tell them you read about their move on the Blog.
'Exploring Toronto' will be launched Thursday, September 7 from 7 - 9 p.m. at Urbanspace Gallery at 401 Richmond. The book is written by a couple dear to the GDNA for their insightful urban design work and commitment to building thoughtful community. I hope people share the desire to find out more about Toronto especially as this part of the city is among those public spaces featured. Published by Toronto's Dundurn Press, books will be available for sale and signing. If you can't make the event, indie bookstores will carry this newest look at what makes Toronto's a great city.
How wonderful to learn that St. Andrew's Playground Park was recently recognized with the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) National Award of Excellence (https://www.csla-aapc.ca/awards-atlas/st-andrews-playground-park), along with Brampton's Riverwalk. Both parks were designed by DTAH in Toronto, an architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design firm. It is great to see local design recognized nationally. DTAH is also one of five shortlisted teams for design of the new park at 229 Richmond Street West. The park has seen lots of use by children, parents, workers, visitors, residents and let's not forget the faithful dogs. Here's to a glorious summer in the park!
There's a new coffee shop on Spadina "sandwiched" between Paramount and Wide Open: Cubano Kings opened May 8 with delicious cafécito and a celebratory guava pastry from Felix, pictured here. Welcome to the neighbourhood!
